Episode 8 - Recognizing Seasonal Depression with Marissa Chabai from BLND Health and Jessica Garrison, writer for FEEL Podcast

Marissa’s Resources/Sources -

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is known as Major Depressive Disorder with seasonal pattern in the DSM-5. Onset of depressive symptoms is directly correlated with a particular time of year and full remission occurs at a certain, separate time of year. No nonseasonal major depressive symptoms occur outside of that time.

Symptoms:

Feeling sad or having a depressed mood

Loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed

Changes in appetite; usually eating more, craving carbohydrates

Change in sleep; usually sleeping too much

Loss of energy or increased fatigue despite increased sleep hours

Increase in purposeless physical activity (e.g., inability to sit still, pacing, handwringing) or slowed movements or speech (these actions must be severe enough to be observable to others)

Feeling worthless or guilty

Difficulty thinking, concentrating, or making decisions

Thoughts of death or suicide;

We can all be affected by season changes/shifts; however, if you feel you might have SAD, please contact a mental healthcare professional such as a social worker, counselor, psychiatric NP, psychologist, or psychiatrist to be evaluated.

Self-care and treatment of SAD/mood related seasonal changes:

Circadian rhythm: transition your sleep/wake cycles to light/dark cycles, get at least 10 minutes of sunlight (or bright light if unavailable) within 2 hours of waking up, nighttime routine

Therapy

Physical activity

Vitamin/mineral deficiency, hormones, and cortisol levels – PCP, functional/integrative medicine provider, holistic psychiatrist

Medication

What do you love about the other seasons? What about that can you incorporate into your routine/life/environment?

Social engagement/support system
